B.T.B. treks to Victoria Peak

Story Picture
On Thursday, March twenty fifth sixteen people will be taking what is probably the ultimate physical challenge of their lives. They will trek twenty-eight miles up Victoria Peak, which is three thousand six hundred and eighty feet high, making it Belize’s highest point. According to Valerie Woods, Tourism Director, the brave hikers will also be rafting on their final leg of the journey as part of the Belize Tourism Board’s anti-litter campaign.

Valerie Woods, Director, Belize Tourism Board

“On Wednesday the group that will be trekking the Victoria Peak, we all assemble at the Cockscomb Basin at the Maya Centre. We get an orientation and then we start out bright and fresh early at six a.m. on Thursday to begin trekking the first twelve kilometers. After that we overnight, camp out and then on Friday we continue for the next nineteen kilometers and on Saturday we proceed to the top of the peak. I say proceed because it is an adventurous activity so we will do it by stages, that way we will ensure that it is accomplished. On Sunday we begin to come back down from the mountain and that is where we will be doing rafting either Sunday evening or Monday, the last couple of kilometers. We chose rafting, Jackie because there is also a litter issue with our rivers, erosion on the sides of the rivers as well as the pollution, so we thought that we can do both dimensions – both land and river. Again highlighting the awareness that we need to keep this country clean, all aspects.”

The hike for a cleaner Belize is expected to be completed by Monday, March twenty-ninth. We here at Channel Five would like to extend best wishes to all hikers for a successful journey including our very own Managing Director Stewart Krohn who has decided to take up the challenge.
