ComPol Williams Urges Belizeans to Celebrate Safely
And because a lot of people go to areas where they can swim, the ComPol is urging those entering the water to be cautious and stay where others can see them. He says too many drownings occur, especially at Easter. He also had a warning for those establishments serving liquor without a license and party goers who think they can drink in public spaces.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We want to warn Belizeans who are going to the water ways to please be extremely careful when swimming. Try not to go into areas where you cannot stand with your head above waters. If you go try to be with somebody else so if something happens to you that person will be there to rescue you. We have also seen that drowning increase over the Easter holiday. We don’t want that to happen this year. We certainly will be looking at alcohol. I have tasked my commanders to do an inspection of all liquor establishments. During the pandemic, many of these establishments that were liquor clubs and bars had applied for restaurant license and they still do only have restaurant license. But, now that the regulations have eased and bars and night clubs can now open they automatically transit into night clubs and bars without having the requisite license. So, I have tasked my commanders to ensure that inspections are done. Restaurants close at twelve midnight. If you have a restaurant license you close at twelve midnight. You can’t go until two three in the morning. That is what we are going to do. Public drinking is going to be enforced. I nuh want hear dah Easter so I could drink in public. The law does not say that.”
