Bar fails to pass resolution

The Bar Association of Belize has rejected a proposed resolution which would have condemned as improper the way in which the plaintiff James Jan Mohammed obtained an order by Justice George Meerabux which declared the appointment of Chief Justice Manuel Sosa to be unconstitutional. The resolution was rejected by a majority of the members present in a vote of twenty-three against, ten in favor. A special meeting was requested by five members of the Bar and held on Thursday night at the Radisson Fort George. The resolution had alleged that the original summons was filed in the Supreme Court and set for hearing by the Acting Deputy Registrar without the knowledge of the Registrar of the Supreme Court and that the action was not placed before the Chief Justice for his allocation of a judge as is the required practice of the Supreme Court. It further stated that no prior notice was served on Manuel Sosa despite the fact that he was the subject of the action and that the relief sought by the plaintiff would affect Sosa’s property rights. Two weeks ago the Bar passed two resolutions: one asking that Justice Meerabux be removed and the other that the Solicitor General Gian Ghandi be removed from office.
