Helmet law to be enforced
Beginning March twenty-ninth, motorcyclists will have to wear helmets with protective eye gear. Although the new law actually came into force on March first, a two-week grace period is being given to let cyclists equip themselves with the head gear. According to councilor Danny Madrid, there have been far too many accidents and deaths that could have been prevented if the victims had only worn a helmet.
Danny Madrid, Councilor
“The law came into force on the first of March and for many years I have noticed that a lot of accidents with motorists, with motorcycles, especially on the highways. And every time we have an accident a person driving a motorcycle dies because of head injuries. A lot of lives can be saved by using helmets so the Ministry saw it fit to pass this regulation and make it law so that lives can be saved.
Also the law is telling us that no business must sell a motorcycle without a helmet but then again we must use our discretion because if a person who buys a motorcycle do have a helmet, we can sell the motorcycle also an eye protector. The helmet must have an eye protector. If you are renting, selling or hiring, you’re lending a motorcycle that person must use a protective helmet. I repeat that you can save your own life by wearing a helmet.”
According to Madrid, those who fail to comply with the law are subject to a fine of fifty dollars, one month in jail or both.
