Cabinet Says No to Increase in Cost of Sliced Bread
Government has rejected a recent proposal to increase the cost of sliced bread, despite a notice that was issued last week by the Association of Bakers informing retailers of an imminent price hike. On Monday, cabinet met in regular session and among the issues discussed was a submission by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise for an adjustment to the control price of sixteen ounce sliced bread. An increase of fifty percent on the wholesale price was being sought, to no avail. Cabinet determined that there will not be a price increase at this time and instructions were given for the Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai to meet with the association to ensure other alternatives to mitigate the likelihood of sudden increases in the price of sixteen sliced bread.
