Feasibility Study to Be Conducted on Five of Belize’s Public Hospitals

Dr. Osmond Martinez

Last September, the Ministry of Economic Development requested technical support for a non-refundable feasibility study on five of Belize’s public hospitals.  That study will be conducted after CABEI responded favorably about a month ago. The institutions that will be involved are the Western Regional Hospital, the Punta Gorda Community Hospital, the Southern Regional Hospital, the Northern Regional Hospital and the San Ignacio Community Hospital. C.E.O. in the Ministry, Doctor Osmond Martinez told News Five that the study comprises two parts.

“One is about nine hundred thousand US from the South Korean Fund and a little bit over a hundred thousand US from the CABEI Funds, so it’s about a million or a little bit more than a million US dollars that we will be using and I mean this is consultants that are being hired directly by CABEI, not by Belize. The objective is to strengthen the infrastructure. Probably it might lead to some new hospitals in some areas, if it is needed, and then at the same time we will have to look at the service, which they will also highlight ways on which to improve the service within the health system. Once we have the feasibility study, once we have what would be the cost to build the hospitals if it is needed to strengthen the infrastructure or the system, then we will definitely find ways how to identify the funds.”

The study will be completed by July.
