Ten Percent Reinstatement Doesn’t Mean Retroactive Payment

Teachers and public officers are no doubt patiently waiting for July first so they can see the reinstatement of the ten percent they had lost on 2021 in the midst of the COVID pandemic and a fragile economy. But while the percentage will be forthcoming, President of the Belize National Teachers’ Union, Senator Elena Smith, says there are still some clarifications among teachers and public officers that ought to be made over what the reinstatement of the ten percent actually means.

“I think some persons had a different understanding and some people thought that come July first I will be getting back that while year that I lost. What the government promised was that it would reinstate the ten percent come July first, so come July first, you are going to be getting the salary that you were getting before the ten percent [cut], as far as we are aware. We have not gotten any other update. That should proceed as indicated and we should be expecting that that should be happening on July first.”
