Belize Joins the World in Celebrating First International Day for Women in Maritime

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development informs that there are over fifty thousand merchant ships registered in at least one hundred and fifty countries, and manned by over a million seafarers. There is a vast disparity in the men to women ratio and a need to advance women’s role in that field of work. On the occasion of International Day for Women in Maritime today, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Commerce, Michel Chebat said that diversity is an issue that several industries struggle to have and maritime is one of them.

“As the Minister responsible for Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance, I encourage all maritime administrations and the maritime sector of Belize to share best practices in achieving gender equality with a view to reaching a barrier-free working environment for women in the maritime community. To the powerful and dynamic women who are currently making waves and charting the course for generations of women in the maritime and shipping sectors, we salute you today and honour your endless contributions.”
