P.U.P. nominates Citco candidates

Story Picture
With much fanfare, at least on the part of one political party, the candidates for the March 3rd City Council Elections were nominated today at City Hall. The People’s United Party organized themselves at Independence Hall on Queen Street and paraded up North Front Street to register their candidates, then marched back to their headquarters to launch their manifesto. News Five followed the trail of blue and white and spoke with some of the candidates who were definitely feeling upbeat.

Merilyn Young, Councilor Candidate, P.U.P.

“Okay. Excited about the big crowd, surprised at the turnout. We have very good supporters so I am very pleased that they all made the effort to come out today.”

Lillette Barkley Waite, Councilor Candidate, P.U.P.

“I’m feeling excited; I’m feeling great; I’m feeling blessed and fantastic. I think we’re gonna have a good day.”

Eloisa Trujeque, Councilor Candidate, P.U.P.

“I want to thank them for their great support and I want to tell them that the partnership will be working”

David Fonseca, Mayoral Candidate, P.U.P.

“Between now and March third we will continue our hard work. The campaign goes house to house as it was going the last three weeks and we take our program to the people as we have been doing and we have been well received by just about everyone. We’re looking forward to the progress of the city. As you know we are very much stifled for the last 5 years by the previous U.D.P. government. Now we have a very friendly P.U.P. government in place in Belmopan and they have already showed the commitment to work along with us to improve on the city’s services and to improve on the city overall. It’s expanding, there’s more energy needed; there’re now ideas to come about and we intend and I personally as Mayor, after March third will push to have committees made up of citizens of the city to get our new ideas, new comments, new views so we can plan and implement this in our plans, so it is benefiting to everyone.”

Said Musa, Prime Minister

“We have an important mission to carry out on March third. Let us not think that this election is not important; it is very important because we have to continue the work started by the P.U.P. government. The change that we see taking place in our country today, where we are building homes for our people who deserve to get a home of their own, where we are improving the educational standards for our young; where we are bringing about a cultural renewal, a cultural renaissance. And one of the things promised in here is for us to upgrade the Bliss Institute so we have a contemporary center where we have proper plays; we could go and enjoy our good plays our good comedy and feel lifted enjoying ourselves. Where we can have better sports facilities. All these things will come about with proper infrastructure when we vote for a P.U.P. City Council.”

Copies of the P.U.P. City Council manifesto, which covers 1999 thru the year two thousand and three, were distributed this morning. The document is divided into five sections: infrastructure, services, education, sports and culture; and community participation. Among the infrastructure changes promised are a comprehensive drainage system, the development of beaches along the city coastline, a sporting complex for the Yabra area and a central bus terminal. The manifesto also promises to abolish property tax for low-income families, lower utility rates, rehabilitate canals and improve the fire department.
