Audubon honors Julian Cho

Story Picture
Mayan leader Julian Cho will receive the James A. Waight Conservation Award from the Belize Audubon Society at a special ceremony tonight. The award, in its tenth year, recognizes the positive work and tireless efforts in the protection and enhancement of Belize’s Environment”. The award winner does not have to be a member of the society, but must be involved in work directly related to environmental protection. He or she must be involved in areas such as the protection of the rainforests, coastal zone protection, pollution control, waste management, eco-tourism, indigenous rights, social and cultural protection and preservation, and the enhancement of the socio-economic environment. Executive Director of the Belize Audubon Society Osmany Salas told us more about the James A. Waight Award and why Cho, who passed away in December, was chosen.

Osmany Salas, Executive Dir., B.A.S.

“Mr. James A. Waight was our founding President and he was the President of the Belize Audubon Society from the beginning of the society from 1969 to about 1986. So for seventeen consecutive years he was the president of the Belize Audubon Society. So the reason for the conservation award is to recognize the efforts of individuals and or organizations who have made significant contributions as far as protection and enhancement of the environment in Belize in honor of our founding president Mr. Waight who completes ninety-two years today.

In the end we decided on Mr. Julian Cho to present him or his family with this award. Because of his fight to represent his people from the Toledo District, the Mayan people in their struggle to claim their land rights and for their struggle against sustainable landing practices in the Toledo District. Mr. Cho distinguish himself as a leader in his short life and we just had to recognize that.”

David Craig will make the award presentation tonight on behalf of the Waight family. Julian Cho’s widow Maggie will accept the award for her husband. The ceremony starts at seven tonight at the Radisson Fort George Hotel. It is the second event to commemorate the Audubon’s thirtieth anniversary. The celebrations will end with the Society’s Annual General Meeting to be held May thirteenth.
