…And says Moya should not have given contract to her brother

Story PicturePerrera was not only upset about being blamed for the scandal, he came armed with documents. He resurrected the old case that the mayor was collecting more salary than she should and brought with him a copy of the council’s minutes which he believes proves his point. He also had in hand a section of the City Council Act which he says is irrefutable evidence that the Mayor should not have awarded a contract to her brother’s trucking company, SM Construction, or made any payments to her sister-in-law, Sharon Wade, without the approval of the council.

Englebert Perrera
“The minutes I have in my hand is telling us the Mayor should get six thousand a month in salary and allowances. The mayor paid herself nine thousand a month without the council approval. The council approved the max of six thousand. The first month she gave herself ten thousand, the second month and up to when I left, she was giving herself nine thousand. I gave her an email later on just before I left with regards to discontinue the nine thousand and put it back to the six thousand because that is what the council had approved. I gave her a letter with regards to that. But the bottom line is that the minutes is telling you that she should get six thousand, she is paying herself nine thousand. With the additional thousand for the first month, when you total it, she was giving herself a hundred and nine thousand for the three years that was not approved by the council. That is theft. She should pay it back. The city council act, page eleven, seven B is telling you if you have any interest in any party, you should not vote in giving contract to those individuals. It is the mayor’s brother. She should have asked the council to vote in order to giver her brother the contract or to okay the garbage collection and buying materials from her brother; she did not do that. As a matter of fact, the council didn’t even know about it till I brought it up. That is illegal. She did not get authorization from the council to do so; that, again, is theft.”

This afternoon, the Belize City Council issued a statement saying that the Mayor has addressed the issues raised by Perrera and will no longer respond to the (quote) “libelous allegations” (unquote) coming from disgruntled former employees. According to the release, the City Council, Social Security payments have always been irregular which reflect the pattern of collections by the council in the high and low seasons.
