Crooked Tree Residents Fear Flooded Causeway

Following the rains overnight, a portion of the Crooked Tree Causeway was reportedly under at least one foot of water this morning. Residents fear that with inclement weather conditions in the north, the lagoon in the village will overflow and they will be faced with a road that is impassable by vehicular traffic.  By midday, most of the water had receded from the road. News Five spoke today with Steve Perriott, a concerned resident who is seeking help in addressing the issue.

“It has been less as of late. But the troubling thing about this one is that this is the first major rain of the season and the lagoon never went dry and if we get more rains like this and the causeway already covered for a short time, then we could expect more of that. All we are saying is that monies have been designated for this road two different times and on both occasions, because of other emergencies across the country, the money was taken away to do that. We understand that and right now there’s over a hundred million dollars being spent on roads and we understand that too, the roads are very important also. But this road is the only way in and out of Crooked Tree. We are just bringing this to G.O.B.’s attention that we don’t want to go through another year of boats. We appreciate when the Coast Guard comes, but that’s a lot of money, a lot of resources that maybe if we jump on it quickly, we don’t have to spend.”

The last time boats were used for residents to traverse to and from the village was pre-COVID.
