Jamaican dance company to perform next month

Story Picture
The Belize National Dance Company will be celebrating its tenth anniversary and to mark the occasion they have invited the Ashe Dance Group of Jamaica to perform at Dance Concert 99′ next month.

Gregory Vernon, Dance Coordinator

“Ashe Dance Group is coming to us from Jamaica. I saw this group in Mexico, Cancun and decided that Belize had to have them because it so much relates to Belizean culture.

Because we haven’t had the chance to bring in groups from Jamaica this will be very special. The last time there was the International Dance Forum, Jamaica was one of the popular company that took part in that festival. So looking at this high energy, young group I decided and the Arts Council decided that it was time to feature this Ashe Company to Belize.”

The Jamaican and Belizean dance companies will hold workshops throughout the country. The eighteen dancers and musicians of Ashe will first perform in Belmopan on March second and will then make their way to Belize City for performances March third to March seventh. The Belize National Dance Company, in its effort to become financially stable, has also established a committee called Friends of Dance. The twelve member team will help the group raise funds and develop a closer relationship with the community.
