Changes to immigration policy announced

If you’re a foreigner living in Belize and you need a work permit or are applying for residency or citizenship, then take note: a new immigration policy takes effect this Friday. There are a number of changes and fee increases which are not likely to be popular. But according to the Ministry of National Security the measures are necessary to protect Belizean jobs, control and manage our borders, apprehend and deport those who violate the laws and improve service to the public. Among the changes are increased fees for work permits and the elimination of permits for not only waitresses as previously announced, but vendors, domestics and farm hands. Permanent resident fees have also gone up, with the rate being charged based on your country of origin. Anyone seeking to be nationalized will also be required to have a basic knowledge of the Constitution of Belize and take an oath of allegiance. The Ministry says it will also be enforcing sections of the constitution which states that citizenship will not be granted to anyone who shows allegiance to, or is a citizen of a country which does not recognize the independence, sovereignty or territorial integrity of Belize. Legislation has also been proposed which would require employers of illegal immigrants to pay their repatriation expenses. Those who transport illegal immigrants could face fines of up to five thousand dollars.
