Why Party Politics in Village Council Elections?

What’s with all the partisan politics overwhelming the village council elections?  After all, it should be a democratic exercise free of red, blue and any other political hue.  But that hasn’t been the case. Despite being at the lowest level of local government, village council elections have been overrun by party politics.  Here’s a perspective from U.D.P. Chairman Mike Peyrefitte.

“Politics is what it is.  I have laid down the rules and regulations as to what we do and don’t do but then it’s up to the people as well when they are running.  Some people are proud PUPs, some people are proud UDPs and they want to display their allegiance.  So even though when they are elected, they are not elected on a political platform to say that, but if people want to express freely that they are members of the UDP or the PUP, then let them do that.  This is freedom of expression.  There is nothing wrong with expressing your political colors.”
