Is Khalid Belisle the Man for Belmopan?

Former Mayor Khalid Belisle aspires to be the next U.D.P. representative for the Belmopan constituency. His opponent in an upcoming leadership convention, for which a date is yet to be announced, will be former Area Representative John Saldivar. It was at the encouragement of the former Leader of the Opposition, Patrick Faber that Belisle decided to take on the challenge. But, with Faber missing in action, does Belisle stand a chance at defeating Saldivar? We asked him about that and why he believes he is the right candidate for the job.

“The extent to which it would, I would say Paul, would remain to be seen. But  I will tell you that it is not anybody outside of the roughly ten thousand or so registered voters of the Belmopan constituency that will have the opportunity to decide who it is that they would like to see represent the UDP going forward. And, those are the people to whom I intend to make my case. Whatever decision they render will certainly be respected by myself. I believe the vision that I have, like I said, I have an extremely progressive vision for the City. I see the potential in Belmopan. We have a unique identity as a community and while I fervently believe in the need to preserve that identity, I also believe that we will need to evolve. We cannot continue to be the Belmopan of the 80’s, 90’s,and early 2000’s, if it is that we are going to be City that can meet the future residents, the current and future residents of this community. And so, like I said, that progressive vision, its insistence on making sure that we are implementing new approaches to all matters of City administration and governance and trying to ensure that at the end of the day all people are served, not just red, not just blue, that everybody, even the none politically affiliated can say yes they are properly represented in Central Government.”
