Colombian Charge D’ Affairs asks for earthquake relief

The Embassy of Columbia is asking Belizeans to help the people of Colombia recover from an earthquake two days ago. The Embassy says that a total of eight hundred people have been confirmed dead, while three thousand two hundred and eight are seriously injured. Charge D’ Affairs Pablo Rebolledo told News Five about the present situation in Columbia.

“The emotional part of this is very sad. Certainly because we have a special affection for our brothers in Perrera and Armania. Even though they are not the biggest cities in the country they really have a special support and affection in all the rest of Columbia because of the coffee. It was a very fast growing city. People have families and ties.

My final appeal at this moment is that Belizean people can participate in anyway that they want to contribute. As I was telling you we have opened this account. I think that by making a voluntary contribution to this account it would be much easier for us to send these contributions. Because as you know to send medicines or to send food or to send clothes that are very welcome. Unfortunately we do not have a direct flight to Columbia and it would take a little bit more time and be a little bit more complex.”

Rebolledo says that the people of Columbia are mostly in need of tents, medicine, and canned food. According to Rebolledo the earthquake has seriously affected the Colombian coffee industry.
