Cuban artist exhibits at Belisle Gallery
Images of the conscious and subconscious are the subject of an exhibition by Cuban artist Manuel Tomas Gonzalez Daza at the Belisle Art Gallery. The show, which opened last night, runs until February third. News Five spoke with the artist who told us he tries to capture the images, or symbols, that enter the mind through all our senses and brighten our dreams. To do this he creates layers of images or mental pictures to show reality has no limit. Gonzalez says that like all artists his work reflects the phases of his life and he is always seeking new subjects. He says he is fascinated by how the Rastafarians in Belize look, sound and move.
Manuel Tomas Gonzalez Daza, Artist
“Fundamentally I consider myself to be a sketch artist. What I do is eliminate those drawings; the transparences are simply the superb position of colorful images but at the same time always preserving the brightness of the images at the far end.
The Rasta people are very interesting – the way they dress, comb their hair, the way they look at things. Yes, I think they are very interesting.”
Gonzalez says he encourages people to come and view the exhibit at the Bliss in person, since the experience is so much richer in real life than on television. Manuel Tomas Gonzalez Daza was born in Havana, Cuba and has exhibited his work in Germany, Italy, France and Costa Rica. He currently resides in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
