City Council cleans drains

Story Picture
Whenever it rains heavily many of the city’s streets flood due to poor drainage. Sometimes however, the solution is as simple as clearing the drains of debris. To help keep the drains clear, the City Council is taking to the streets with a truck especially equipped to do this kind of work, and do it rapidly. News Five spoke with Lawrence Ellis, Director of Sanitation today on North Front Street.

Lawrence Ellis, Director, Sanitation

“The truck was bought mainly to do the cover draining for the infrastructure project, but we find that it is useful in all the drains. If you can see over here, it would have taken us nearly a day and change to bail the water out of the drain. This truck will take us twenty minutes to bail out the entire drains. The council is on a serious campaign right now to have all drains clean and all culverts clean, all outlets clean so that whenever the rain comes we will be prepared for it.”

Q: “The water that the truck is moving out, what will be done with the water?”

Lawrence Ellis

“Well the water will be dumped up the road by a river and will be dumped in the river because it’s just the drain water.”

Lawrence says the City Council will be doing daily drain cleaning throughout the city.
