Minister of Sports Hands Over Lawn Mowers to Sports Council

During the COVID lockdown, sporting events were generally banned and the grass was overgrown and unkempt. But now that life has returned to a sense of normalcy and sports is back on track, public stadiums and fields need to be regularly groomed. It was no surprise today when Minister of Sports, Rodwell Ferguson stopped by the National Sports Council’s office at the Marion Jones Stadium in Belize City to hand over a donation of lawn mowers and weed whackers. The equipment will be distributed to all six districts for use on fields that are managed by the sports council. Minister Ferguson explained to us that the forty-five-thousand-dollar investment came through additional funding that his ministry requested, and Sports Director Ian Cal was more than happy to receive the gifts.

“Nobody uses machetes anymore. It’s weed whackers and lawn mowers, so we got two for every district across the country, two weed whackers, two lawn mowers. Belize City has six lawn mowers and two weed whackers. So with these, we’ll be able to maintain the fields and they look better because we got several complaints that our facilities are rundown or out of control. So we are making sure we can improve them. We request additional funds from the government and we were successful, so we are trying to make sure we can maintain (the stadiums) and reach out to the young people.”
