Mikado offers sewing classes
One downtown business takes customer relations very seriously and this past Christmas had a two-for-one offer on toys which brought hundreds of shoppers into the store. This month, Mikado has another promotion underway: sewing classes. The idea seems to make good business sense since the store sells a wide variety of curtain and clothing materials. However, the course, which is free, does have a catch, an expensive one.
Owner Umesh Mahitani has enlisted the support of two sewing instructors who have been visiting various Caribbean countries to teach how to cut sewing patterns in just one hour. Instructor Fernando Espinosa told us more about the new German sewing system.

“We are using a rule called, “the golden rule”. It is exactly the same rule used by painters and sculptors. You get a perfect fitting. This rule explains that the human body is perfectly proportioned within itself. I mean even if we are tall, fat or thin it does not matter. (demonstrates) “If I open my arms, this is my complete length. This for instance is the same size of the foot; this for instance the nose. So we know our body is perfectly proportioned. That is why we only use two measurements: the bust and the hips. From these two we can develop the others without working with all of them. That is why we use less measurements.”
New Students who were on hand this afternoon were all surprised to find out that they could learn to cut patterns so quickly.

“I am taking this course because I understand it is something that would have taken me two years to learn. Now I am learning in one hour. I hope to do a waist coat and I hope it will help me to do my own sewing.”
Cecelia Chiac, New Student
“I read it in the newspaper. I thought it was something very interesting and for us to learn something for free and more about sewing. I can sew uniforms for my kids which I have. I think I need to learn something before they learn so I could teach them.”
The classes are free, however, the booklets with the Golden Rule” are not. For you to take home your own booklet and equipment you have to pay one hundred and seventy dollars and two hundred and fifty dollars for the bigger booklet. Hyacinth Latchman for News Five.
The sewing classes continue for the next three weeks.
