Low Lying Areas in Belmopan Prone to Flooding
The Belmopan Emergency Committee has issued a notice to residents of the Garden City informing them of the low pressure system that is expected to affect the entire country over the weekend. With the expected outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms, a flood watch is in effect and there is a possibility of flooding over low-lying and flood prone areas in Belmopan. News Five spoke with Ludwig Palacio at the Belmopan City Council about this notice that he says is coming from the Belmopan Emergency Management Organization.
On the phone: Ludwig Palacio, Belmopan City Council
“We are aware and notified of the tropical depression or the heavy rains which are expected over the weekend. As you know, Belmopan has several low lying areas, for example the J&W area, the Maya Mopan, the Salva Pan area, all those areas have water sheds that could rise and could become potentially dangerous to the residents. So, we would like them to take all the necessary precautions just should in case they experience a flood situation. So, they have to listen to their radio, listen to NEMO, listen to the Weather Bureau of Belize to be alert and avoid any kind of situation that could happen as a result of floods.”
