Jorge Espat, Minister of National Security
“The government has allocated a little under two hundred thousand dollars to do some new renovations of the Belize City Queen Street precinct. This afternoon we have decided to take you all on a tour and talk to you about the things we are going to do. Basically, the first building we are going to put down a first floor where we will have a customer friendly, where Belizeans can just walk off the street and they will meet with police officers to make their complaints on the first floor. We will put in some new detention cells, if I can call them humane detention cells. They will provide better facilities for those who will use them. As well we want to relocate the National Forensic Service. We want to relocate it here and give it an office here on the grounds here at Queen Street precinct.
Obviously the crime level while it has gone down considerable continues to be our priority in the fight against crime and violence. I think this is in fact the most deplorable in the Belize District. It certainly cannot showcase the new image that we are projecting for the Ministry of National Security and Immigration.”
Espat says that by giving the police officers a cleaner and more comfortable atmosphere they will be able to be more efficient with their work.
