James Adderley has football highlights in Sports Monday
Good evening, I’m James Adderley so pull up for another portion of Sports Monday. It’s playoff time in the B.F.L. and all four teams saw action over the weekend. Yesterday we caught up with the People’s Stadium match-up that saw defending champion Juventus of Orange Walk open against the Belmopan Bandits the last team to hand them a regular season loss.
Juventus intends to avenge that loss today and Marcelino Tun tries to open the scoreboard with a header but John Labriel beasts him to the pill. At the other end Belmopan looks for offense with a right away punch but it has not the speed to beat Charlie Slusher. It’s the perfect opportunity now for Belmopan to take the lead but Deon Frazier arrives a milli-second too late to be effective. But here comes Marcelino Tun for Juventus; only he misses the far side of the target.
Meanwhile someone told Ian Henry to go offensive and watch him sail through traffic only he can’t come up with the finish. Nevertheless folks it’s Juventus with the pressure now, Allan Tubos Flowers smashes a right foot right at Labriel; Marcelino Tun sails the rebound off our crossbar. In the closing moments of the first half, Marcelino Tun again fails to impress the scoreboard in a ticklish situation.
We go to second half and again it’s Marcelino Tun on the move firing from the left side but the angle fails to acute. Belmopan responds with a long range left foot punch but it won’t beat Charlie Slusher. Christopher Hendricks’ long range launch lashes in the net behind Labriel for the 1-zip Juventus lead. It’s Marcelino Tun looking for his goal and there are three clear shooting opportunities before he finally kicks on a block.
Folks some days are worse than others and for Marcelino Tun this outing could only be nightmarish as he fails to score again. Then it’s Freddie Tun’s turn to squander the easy scoring opportunity when he misfires from pointblank range. Hendricks looks for his second of the match with a header but John Labriel pulls out a pretty save. He gets another opportunity on the very next play but the shot is direct at Labriel.
However, the big goal did come when Rogel Jones fires a left foot two minutes to long whistle, and it reaches the net despite the initial stop by the keeper. Juventus wins the opener 2-zip on the way to a fourth title.
Meanwhile the other playoff match found La Victoria at Sagitun, Independence Saturday night. Sagitun won in 2-1 in overtime. It’s week I of the play that finds Juventus – 3 points, Sagitun – 2 points, Corozal – 0 and Belmopan – 0.
The top two in this round move on to the 3 game championships. This Sunday La Victoria hosts Juventus, and Sagitun travels to Belmopan. In Belize District playoff action, KREM Lakers edged Independence 1-zip while San Pedro hurt Foundation Bombers 1-nil on penalties.
That’s it folks. Join us same time, same place… you know it. I’m James Adderley. Jah over all.
