The pleasantries over, Prime Minister Siew then joined a motorcade to Belize City for a luncheon at the Fiesta Inn. In his welcoming remarks, Prime Minister Musa said that Belize is celebrating almost ten years of excellent diplomatic relations with Taiwan which has culminated in the historic visit of Prime Minister Siew, his Cabinet ministers and members of his delegation.

Said Musa, Prime Minister

“It was during our previous term of office, on the eleventh of October, 1989 that we took the decisive step of establishing diplomatic relations with the Republic of China. Since then, our governments have shared a strong and meaningful relationship. Taiwan has made significant contributions to diverse sectors of Belize’s economy over the years. It was through a combination of grants and loans from the Taiwanese government that we were able to construct the Belchina Bridge, and establish a shrimp hatchery, build the Center for Employment Training in Belize City, set up the Regional Language Center, which will soon be completed in Belmopan, upgrade the Belmopan Hospital and continue the paving of the Southern Highway.

Now with your help we are preparing to embark on a massive housing scheme for new satellite towns and to reactivate the Libertad Factory to provide much needed opportunity in the Corozal District. Through an ongoing education program, one hundred and twenty Belizeans have visited Taiwan and participated in seminars, conferences, skills training program and working visits. Belize continues to support Taiwan’s internationalization efforts at the United Nations. In my address to the fifty-third Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly, I stated that Belize supports the right of the Republic of China, Taiwan to participate fully in the work of the United Nations and its organs, as well as in international financial development institutions.”
