C.I.B. expects to make arrest tomorrow in B.T.L. theft

Story Picture
Three days after the discovery that a large amount of money had been stolen from B.T.L.’s office on Church Street, police say they are close to making an arrest. Authorities tell News Five since there are no signs of a break-in they believe the theft of over fifty-seven thousand dollars in cash and checks and over four thousand dollars worth of prepaid phone cards was carried out by a B.T.L. employee. Initially the police and B.T.L. officials suspected a security guard and cashier, who both had access to the area, worked together to open the safe and steal the five deposit bags containing the items sometime on Saturday. However, today C.I.B. tells News Five they now have ruled out conspiracy and believe only one person was involved. On Monday the police had detained a security officer and the two cashiers who last had access to B.T.L.’s safe. Since then A.I.P. Simeon Alvarez, Head of C.I.B. says they have released the security officer and the cashier who noticed the safe was empty when he went to work Monday morning. The cashier, who worked between two and six that Saturday evening, is still detained. According to Alvarez, police have also determined that a surveillance camera was not deliberately turned off for six minutes on Sunday but that the equipment malfunctioned on its own. C.I.B. says they expect to make an arrest sometime tomorrow.
