Will GOB Appeal Court Decision on Barrow’s Damages?

Dean Barrow

Should the decision be appealed, notwithstanding a significant reduction in the amount that was initially being sought by the former prime minister, will he seek more in compensatory and vindicatory damages?

Dean Barrow, Claimant

“I can tell you one thing, we will not cross appeal asking for more.  We would be entitled to do that.  Remember, I keep coming back to the fact that there is this range and the point at which the judge came down is open to challenge by the government on the basis that they think the award is too high.  It is also open to challenge by me, on the basis that I think the award is too low, but I’m saying that I’m satisfied with the quantum of the award.  Listen, ultimately the taxpayer is on the hook and government needs to be blamed for placing the taxpayer on the hook, but there is no way I would cross-appeal asking for more.  That’s not going to happen, so they can appeal all they like, I am not going to meet them with a cross-appeal saying, “You want me to get less?  Well I want you to pay me more.”  No, no.  I will simply rest content with what has been awarded and my counsel will, on the appeal, seek to persuade the Court of Appeal that what was given was fair and not, in fact, excessive.”
