James Adderley has the holiday weekend sports
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and nuff thanks for joining our first serving of Sports Monday in 1999. Yesterday the M.C.C. Grounds hosted the biggest crowd of this B.F.L. season as the Yabra Sporting Club faced second round leader Sagitun of Mango Creek in a must win situation.
Yabra goes for instant offense from Ofus Bradley but the left foot launch is corralled by Darren Hinds. At the other end Brent Burgess gets busy with a burst in traffic but Willie Bo steps on it. Sagitun keeps the pressure on attacking from the right side but the punch sails a bit too high. A bicycle kick by “Manu” McColly creates excitement but fails to move the scoreboard. It’s “Manu” McColly again on offense but his right away left foot bomb explodes outside the target. Folks it’s a powerful display of strength and it pays off for McColly who finds Jorge Herrera and Yabra takes the 1-zip lead going to the locker room.
In early second half action Sagitun looks for the equalizer but Brent Burgess misplays in front of the goal. A miscue by McColly almost provides the victim with the equalizer but the moment passes. It’s more Mango Creek offense but Willie Bo makes the save… and yes folks the departure of Darren Jones spells trouble for the Yabra defense.
In fact it’s not even 2 minutes after Darren’s departure when a defensive lap gives Omar Zambara the opportunity to beat Willie Bo and it’s a tied ball game. Sagitun now looks for the lead but Willie Bo comes up with the shop despite the fumble. Still the win comes for Sagitun when Brett Burgess is ignored by the defense for which the pay is maximum price. Sagitun wins 2-1 and leads to the kickoff while Yabra’s playoff ambition has been dealt the death blow.
In other results over the weekend, Jube hurts its playoff chances with a 1-1 tie with Acros; Belmopan Builders stunned Juventus 2-zip and even more surprising the Dangriga Jaguars burned La Victoria 2-1.
Turning to the cycling scene, we join the 9th KREM Classic with the 2 major players sizing up each other before the big sprint. On the right is the professional Skip Spangenburg riding for Smiling Meats and on the inside, Belize’s best Ernest Meighan of Santino’s Janis.
It’s money time now and “Jaw Meighan” makes his move on the outside and then it’s no contest, give it up for Ernest Meighan people, he’s number one.
Teammate James Frampton pulls up uncontested for third, Shane Vasquez of Cayo pulls up fourth while Francisco “The Animal” Flores of Santino’s rounds out the top 5. So who is going to stop the Santino’s Janis in 1999?
That’s it folks. Join us same time, same place for another edition of Sports Monday. I’m James Adderley. Jah over all.
