Cubans in custody; boat still on reef
The story of the Cubans that were found off the coastof Belize is unraveling and more details have been uncovered. A reliable source has informed us that there were two bodies that were found on the reef, not one. The bodies were found about fourteen miles north of Middle Caye by the North Light House. The body of a female was still intact, but the other was rapidly decomposing, said an eyewitness account. The source says that the Cubans were initially hesitant to say if anyone died but one of them later revealed that the bodies were thrown overboard after they died from overexposure to the elements. The Cubans were found stranded on the reef in a wooden boat with a tattered sail. In addition to an inner tube, the members of the group had very few belongings, they were mostly dehydrated and two of them were very ill. When they were found on February fourteenth, they were given water and food. The police and the coastguard were called to assist but no one came until they found out about the body. On the fifteenth, a tourist who saw them the day before on the island took them to the mainland. It has been reported that their vessel was lost at sea, but as the picture shows, it is still grounded on the reef. The surviving Cubans originally said they were heading to Honduras, but admitted afterwards that they were trying to reach San Pedro, where some of them had relatives waiting for them. The Cubans have been detained and charged with Illegal Entry. One of the three who were admitted to the Southern Regional Hospital has since disappeared.
