Football leads weekend sports

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re right on time for a fresh serving of Sports Monday. For Acros football team of Belize City, a winless second half in the current B.F.L. Competition seems to be quickly approaching a painful reality. Yesterday the struggling Acros team looked to change its circumstances against another struggling ball club: Southern United of Toledo.

We open with Acros being the beneficiary of a defensive error but the punch by “Puntus” Gentle inches outside the sticks. Eight minutes later it’s Rito Lambey at midfield and he fires a long range bomb that sinks in the net behind a diving John Brooks and Southern United leads 1-zip, 18 minutes in. Meanwhile folks, John Trapp gets a pass perfectly to #6 but he knows not how to finish in front of an open goal. And at the half it’s a 1-zip ball game.

Immediately out of intermission the southern team looks to put the game out of reach but #10 Ali Mangar can’t finish the play. Folks when it’s going bad, it simply gets worse as here the referee refuses to blow the offside whistle but David Rodriguez might have had on attack of conscience. At the other end it’s Southern United’s turn and they naturally follow suit.

Off a curve kick, Acros looks for the equalizer, but the header is weak. It’s more action off the corner as Acros keeps pressing but the P.G. keeper comes up with a spectacular save. Meanwhile folks for #11 of P.G. this can only be one moment he would like to replay for obvious reasons. Now folks can you believe this sudden turn of fortune for Acros. It’s the closing moments when zealous defense, #14 tires to head this ball out of the area, instead he gives Acros the final goal. It’s good for the 1-1 final score but Acros nevertheless remains winless in the second round so far with only two more to go.

In other results, Yabra got burned 2-1 by the Belmopan Builders at Capital City but we understand Yabra has lodged a protest. Dangriga Jaguars tied Real Verdes 1-1 at Dangriga, one which Dangriga needed, while Sagitun scorched La Victoria 1-zip in a battle for supremacy. Sagitun remains on top of the standings. The game between Jube and Juventus, that’s the defending champion, still undefeated, was scraped until January 6th. Channel Five will keep you posted.

Finally folks, in cycling, James Frampton took Saturday’s 50 mile race from Orange Walk to Belize City. Ernest Meighan took second, Orson Butler, third, Nigel Matus, fourth, while Francisco “the animal” Flores rounds out the top five.

Hey folks that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
