G.O.B. Working on an Energy Plan for Become Self-Sufficient in Electricity

Michel Chebat

The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance is also working on an energy plan for the country. It is all in an effort for Belize to become independent of Mexico for electricity from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (C.F.E.). It would mean that the government would be looking to other sources of renewable energy to supply the national grid, making the country self-sufficient. Minister Michel Chebat explains more about the energy policy, which is expected to be reveal at the end of this year.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance

“It is a number one priority for us and not only because of C.F.E., but I don’t think that for our own national interest and security it is wise for us to continue depending on a source which we have no control over, so to speak. We need to become more energy independent and more energy efficient and we need to move away from fossil fuels. So the task at hand is to identify renewable sources of energy. I can tell you that B.E.L. has been working with Siemens for them to help us create a report and study as to what type of renewable energy would be suited for what part of the country. We expect that that report will be concluded very shortly. And what will follow from that is that we are going to be seeing a request for power being issued so that we can get tenders for persons and companies who may be interested in providing either solar wind or hydro energy, which in we want to get to that as quickly as we can. So that is in the pipeline as well.”
