Airport Expansion Program to Address Growing Number of Travellers

And, while cruise tourism is steadily bouncing back, the Phillip Goldson International Airport has been inundated with overnight travellers outside the regular tourist season. While Tillett conceded that the current travel experience at the P.G.I.A. may negatively affect the experience of visitors, he gave some details of an expansion project that the airport’s management is looking to undertake.

“I think the airport is doing the best they can with what they have. I know that there are some issues where they need expansion. I know that they just acquired a piece of property where they should start renovate and expand. And, there is a significant program, and you can probably check with the management of the airport to get more details on that. But, I think that is critical for the success so the overnight sector going forward, and for the visitor’s experience, I think that is definitely a necessity in terms of fixing those things. I think that once we continue to strategically market the country as we are now, we see the benefits of that. Even though you have challenges of airlifts, canceled flights, reduction in capacity and all that, I think Belize is in a position to do well and pretty much almost recover fully by the end of 2022.”
