Keeping Young People Engaged During the Summer in Fort George

It is one of three summer camps that were organized in the Fort George constituency.  Area Representative Henry Charles Usher says that the youth within the community were also engaged in an art and sport summer camp, which he says it critical for their overall development.

“Every summer we try to have these summer camps and this year, we had three very exciting summer camps. Different – we had a STEAM summer camp that a student from Belize High School, a resident here in Fort George, was able to do for us. Certainly we were excited about it and you saw all the happy faces today when they got their certificates. We also had the completion of an arts summer camp; I want to thank Mister Carlos, the tattoo artist from the area. He was the one who did that summer camp for us. We recently concluded that this week. And we also had a fencing summer camp. As you know Miss Yolanda Fonseca is on the fencing association and she was gracious enough to come here and teach the young people the basic of fencing. So it was really exciting to be here among them and to be a part of the summer camp. So we try to do as much as we can.”

“Sir how important it is to keep these young people engaged during this time that they are away from the classrooms?”

Henry Charles Usher

“It is absolutely critical that we keep not only their minds, but their bodies engaged as well so that they can stay active, they can stay healthy, they can be a part of this community. I always tell everybody, Fort George for me is more than a constituency. It’s the community that I grew up in, it is the community that I love, and it’s the community that the people – we look out for each other.”
