Henry Charles Usher Sets the Record Straight on P.C.C.

Henry Charles Usher

Earlier this week, it was reported elsewhere in the media that the father-in-law of Minister Henry Charles Usher, former Belmopan Mayor Anthony Chanona, had been tapped to head the People’s Constitutional Commission.  On Thursday, the Ministry of the Public Service, Constitutional and Political Reform and Religious Affairs debunked that information as false.  We asked Minister Usher about the composition of the commission and how that erroneous information may have come about.

“What disappointed me about that whole media position was that it was the opposition media which is known to be discreditable.  I mean, really, they are the ones who put out something on Facebook and then the independent media picked it up as if it was fact.  Now, I‘m someone that you can reach by phone very easily.  My C.E.O. is someone that can easily be reached by phone, anyone of us could have clarified the issue that no, Mr. Chanona was never in the running to be the chairman of the Public Services Commission. As a matter of fact, the term of the last commission or most of their members came to an end at the end of June and the prime minister is still making his determination as to who he will recommend to sit on the Public Services Commission. Now, I find it interesting that, one, that it went out without any verification. I wonder how many other stories have gone out without verification, but certainly it was disappointing but we move on from that.”
