Belize Bank Super League heading into championships
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
Week four of the Belize Bank Super League post season saw Valley Renaissance take its big time game to San Felipe Barcelona yesterday in a bid to stay atop the four team standings. However, today San Felipe is searching for its first playoff win in four tries so they look to move the scoreboard very early off this corner kick that sees Christopher Hendricks’ header edge over the crossbar. At the eleventh minute, Barcelona grabs the lead when Christopher Hendricks fires this low cruise bouncer that beats Woodrow West for the 1-zip San Felipe lead. Barcelona then goes to the set piece to double the lead. The attempt by Oscar Acevedo looks good but it fails to bend in time to impress the scoreboard. At the other end Harrison Tasher mounts this individual effort that forces a stop from the San Felipe keeper, Darel Novelo. On the very next play Tasher fires this long range bomb that the keeper can’t handle; the rebound reaches Dwayne Sampson who finds Alexander Peters and he ties the ballgame at the twenty-second minute. Thirty-nine minutes in Dwayne Sampson fires this bullet on the run that gives the visitors a 2-1 lead to take into intermission.
When play resumes, Valley Renaissance picks up where they left off. Alexander Peters robs the Barcelona defense and his attempt to score is only thwarted by the heroic effort of Darel Novelo. On this press, Peters will not be denied and he makes it a 3-1 ballgame with this sweet left foot push fifty-three minutes in. twelve minutes later Alexander Peters strikes for his third goal of the ballgame and again it’s the left foot as the Valley takes a 4-1 lead. The response by the hometown is immediate and effective as Christopher Hendricks smashes home his second goal of the match to make it a 4-2 score line at the sixty-sixth minute. However, Dwayne Sampson is on fire today people and this sweet left foot gives Valley Renaissance a 5-2 lead. Now the rout is on people. Rodney Sanchez, fresh off the bench, comes in and leaves Novelo in the dust to make it 6-2. Harrison Tasher then fires the right foot just inside the eighteen to make it a 7-2 big W for Valley Renaissance, who seem to be living up to their name.
In the other match-up over the weekend, Kraal Road held Texmar Boys to a 1-1 draw at Independence on Saturday. It’s quite surprising. Thus, after four weeks of post season play Valley Renaissance has leapt into the lead with ten points and is already qualified for the championship round with two outings remaining. Texmar Boys is in second with eight points, Kraal Road has two points and San Felipe Barcelona; one. It would be a miracle for Kraal Road or San Felipe to take Texmar’s spot in this two team championship round that comes up next. This Sunday Kraal Road will host San Felipe Barcelona at the M.C.C. Grounds while the big clash will be inside the Carlos Ramos Stadium Sunday at Dangriga where Valley Renaissance plays host to Texmar Boys.

On the basketball scene, let’s head to the Multi-Complex building in Orange Walk on Saturday where St. Jude RC School and St. Ignatius of Belize City are locked in a duel for the National male primary school basketball title. Brian White gets s St. Ignatius going with this bomber in traffic. However, with the height advantage and an array of skills, Akeem Walters gets busy for his team. St. Ignatius, nevertheless, hangs tough as Cordel Gonzalez delivers the deuce and at the half St. Ignatius is up by 19-15. In second half, Sydney Bradley keeps his team ahead with this slick lay up and St. Ignatius leads with six minutes to go. It’s a nine point deficit when Kieran Fuller’s turn around drops. Akeem Walters then hits this big three; he would lead all players with twenty points. This bucket by Kevin Brown is big as he brings his team to within one point. Folks, tied at 31 points apiece, both teams come up with big misses in money time. Akeem Walters is fouled; he sails both for the 33-31 lead. Khambel Blease goes for win for Natius, he misses the target, gives the W to St. Jude RC of Cayo and with that they take home the national male primary schools basketball title.
