A Woman Falls to Her Death at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Lucero Aguirre

Thirty-five-year-old Lucero Aguirre lost her life on Tuesday morning while visiting the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.  The resident of San Juan Village, Stann Creek District, was along with her family on the Tiger Fern Trail when she reportedly fell and was seriously injured while climbing one of the cliffs.  Aguirre was immediately tended to by four trained personnel based at the sanctuary.  They provided aid to the injured woman until a team of paramedics from the Southern Emergency Services arrived from Hopkins Village.  In a statement issued by the Belize Audubon Society which co-manages the park, it says, (quote), while the ambulance was strategically positioned at the entrance of the trail, the B.A.S. team, paramedic team and volunteers helped to transfer Aguirre via a basket stretcher to it.  Aguirre was then transferred via ambulance to the Southern Regional Hospital but she was sadly declared dead on arrival by medical officials at the medical facility, (unquote).  In the wake of the unfortunate incident, the Belize Audubon Society has advised its tourism partners and the public that the Tiger Fern Trail is closed until further notice.
