Kids join in on Int’l Children’s Broadcasting Day
This Sunday will be celebrated as International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. It’s a day when children all over the world get to voice their opinions, hopes and dreams through the media. News Five visited with some students selected by the National Committee for Families and Children to speak for the children of Belize on various issues.
The students of Queen’s Square Anglican School were more than willing to tell us what they want to be when they grow up and why they like school, but they also spoke out about serious social problems facing children today.

“I would like to be a nurse because I would like to be what my mother was in England. I like school because I am learning more and I am going to have a better future.”

“I would like to be a teacher.”

“Because I like to see how my teacher teaches upstairs.”

“Everything, just to go to school and have fun.”

“People killing each other in the streets.”
A growing problem facing Belize’s children is that of little girls going missing for days, even weeks. One such incident even resulted in the child being murdered. The pupils of Queen’s Square Anglican are very concerned about this situation and hope that with the help of parents such a terrible problem can soon be eliminated.

“I think that the parents are careless. I think they are giving the children too much freedom. Maybe the child is being abused and that’s why they are being killed.”

“I think that they should be more careful and their mothers should be with them while they are on the street.”
And those are very strong words coming from our youths. They might be young but they know the reality of this potentially terrible world. Let’s listen to them as they continue to voice their opinions to us. Reporting for News Five, I am Hyacinth Latchman.
International Children’s Day of Broadcasting is being sponsored by the National Committee for Families and Children and UNICEF Belize. Channel Five will be airing a number of special programs for children this Sunday. Last year one hundred and seventy-five countries took part in the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. Belize has participated since 1996.
