ComPol Says Surveillance Cameras Have Helped to Nab Murderers

While police continue to gather their evidence in the murder of Vanessa Acevedo, a number of persons have criticized the low conviction rate for murders in Belize. A lot of the acquittals that occur are because there is a lack of eyewitnesses who are willing to testify against accused triggermen, leaving the case against these criminals weak. But where those witnesses have been scarce or scared to assist, technology is filling the void. Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams told News Five that in one such murder that is still unsolved – that of Duane White, who was shot and killed on July seventh on Antelope Street Extension – police are relying on surveillance footage to gather their evidence against the gunman.

“The camera system we have helped us tremendously in many investigations and we’re hoping that down the road they will continue to do so. We do have some in the Antelope Street Extension area and have collected a number of footages that we’re still reviewing. Some of them are not too clear and we’re trying to see what we can do to enhance them and identify the perpetrators. But yes, the matter with Mr. White is one that we are vigorously pursuing with the hope that we are going to find those who are responsible for it.”
