Samuel Pop Perishes in Vehicle Collision in Cotton Tree

A family from Frank’s Eddy Village in the Cayo District continues the mourn the death of Samuel Pop, who lost his life on Sunday night in a vehicle collision on the George Price Highway in Cotton Tree Village. Five other persons travelling in both vehicles suffered varying degrees of injury, but survived the ordeal while Pop, who was behind the steering wheel of a pickup truck, died on the spot. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Sometime around 8:30 on Sunday night, Samuel Pop was driving a pickup truck from the direction of Belmopan heading to his house in Frank’s Eddy Village. Travelling with him at the time were his wife and brother-in-law. As they neared the entrance to King’s Children’s Home in Cotton Tree, a red pickup collided into them.

“A red in color Toyota pickup which was driver at the time by Geronimo Bol who was travelling in the direction from Belize City to Belmopan and also police saw another Toyota pickup black in color which was driver by one Max Samuel which was travelling in the opposite direction where Max Samuel was seen with various head and body injuries and succumbed at the scene.”

 

Heyra Monterosa says they got the dreaded call from her sister minutes after the accident happened. They rushed to the scene.

“Gial we ketch ina accident but Sam noh di respond. I tell ahn weh unu deh? Weh unu deh? Ih tell me ih deh by children’s home. And so we run gone with my pa and when we reach, lotta people done mi deh deh and police and ambulance mi deh deh. When I reach, I run gone dah di vehicle and I still gone and touch fi he hand and I know I still feel fi he hand mi still. And I tell police take ahn out, take ahn out, but dehn neva want take ahn out and ambulance mi deh deh too. So, the police tell me, we can’t do nothing miss, we can’t too nothing. I tell ahn yes, I di feel ih hand, I di feel ih hand. He tell me no miss, we can’t do nothing he done dead. My little brother got hurt on his head and by his chin. He get a CT-scan by the hospital, but everything is alright. My little sister, she just today she start feeling like she’s hurt. She get an x-ray too, but everything’s good.”

 

Pop died on the spot. His wife and brother-in-law were among five persons taken to the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan. Monterosa tells News Five that Pop pulled to the side of the road to avoid the collision.

The driver of the red pickup, Geronimo Bol, has since been served with a notice of intended prosecution as the investigation continues. Duane Moody for News Five.
