Belmopan Mayor: The Optics Are Bad Because I Didn’t Pick My Slate

This is the second time since the municipals in 2021 that the Belmopan City Council, under Mayor Palacio, has been in contention over her management style. The optics of it does not look too good and she says that she is now dealing with councilors who she did not select to run on the same ballot with her.

“When I run again I will make sure I pick my own slate. I did not choose them. If you were following elections, the mayors go up by themselves and you have a group of so many people coming from all over, and it goes down to vetting. Some of these folks should have never been even on slate. Obviously vetting was not done properly and there’s one among them – I was tutoring her to become mayor. So there’s some selfishness in it because obviously the position is coveted.”
