Second bridge closure creates traffic jam
If you thought the traffic was bad during the Hurricane Mitch evacuation that was nothing compared to the traffic snarls and delays this afternoon. City residents have been patient enough with the closure of the Swing Bridge for months now but people appear to be reaching their limit as to what they can bear. This afternoon News Five received cellular phone calls from people voicing their frustration at the long delays when the Belchina was closed for the second day in a row leaving drivers with only one open bridge. The problem was bad enough yesterday, but on a Friday afternoon? When asked why the work could not be carried out at night, sources at City Hall told News Five it is the Ministry of Works which is carrying out the project and that some of the materials being used for the resurfacing need to be laid under the hot sun. But this explanation does not explain why the work could not be done on the weekend when there is far less need for the bridge. News Five’s attempts to reach the Ministry of Works for comment were unsuccessful. It can only be hoped that there will be some better planning the next time around.
