Red Cross thanks Belizeans for Mitch contributions

Whenever there is a crisis in any part of the world the Belize Red Cross is always there to lend a helping hand. Their latest effort in this part of the world has been offering relief from the effects of Hurricane Mitch in neighboring Central American countries. News Five had the opportunity to speak with Audrey Courtenay about the overall response of the Belizean public to this catastrophe.
Audrey Courtenay, Director, Belize Red Cross
“We’ve had some very small children coming down from Ladyville or Lady of the Way Church with their lovely speech and their contributions. So it has been fantastic. All the districts have sent in bails of clothes, food and money. We can’t give you a total of the money yet because the appeal closes on the seventh officially and the bank will then inform us what the contributions have been like.
We had one lady who came in a very gentle, quiet way. She came from Burrell Boom Village and said she wanted to make a small contribution to our neighboring countries. We expressed our appreciation and she just produced a hundred dollar bill. As far as I am concerned that’s like giving a million dollars.”
Courtenay says supplies were distributed in Honduras, Nicaragua and some were even sent to Guatemala. On December twenty-second, over two hundred children will be treated to a Christmas party hosted by the Belize Red Cross.
