Belize to sell rice to Mexico
The way has been cleared for Belize to export rice to Mexico. According to a government press release, a three day meeting in Mexico City between Belizean and Mexican officials has resulted in an agreement for phytosanitary certification of Belizean rice so it may enter the Mexican market. The negotiating team, led by Minister of Trade Ralph Fonseca, included P.S. Cresencio Sosa and rice farmer Peter Dyck of Blue Creek. They were later joined by B.E.L. chairman Bobby Usher and Project Manager Derek Davis for talks with the Federal Electricity Commission to extend the agreement for the purchase of Mexican electricity. According to the release the talks also laid the foundation for negotiations on a comprehensive Belize-Mexico trade agreement which will take place next year.
