N.P.C. Attempts to Repair a Shattered Opposition

The United Democratic Party’s National Party Council met over the weekend, in another attempt at putting an end to the internal strife that threatens to destroy the U.D.P. at its core. A meeting several weeks ago between former Party Leader Patrick Faber, Albert Area Representative Tracy Panton, and current Party Leader Shyne Barrow, with the intervention of a religious leader, brought about a truce. But, this period of peace in the U.D.P. was short-lived. Only one week ago, Faber was removed from the U.D.P.’s executive committee after failing to comply with requests for him to desist from publicly attacking his party leader via Facebook. Well, over the weekend the National Party Council echoed those requests, says U.D.P. Chairman Michael Peyrefitte. He spoke with reporters via Zoom.

“All parties were duly invited and a quorum was present, which means that all decisions passed by the N.P.C. on Saturday have to be followed by anyone in the N.P.C. who wants to remain in the U.D.P. We took a motion that came right out of the constitution of the Party, which is kinda superfluous, but the N.P.C. believe that they wanted to reemphasize certain aspects of the U.D.P. constitution, and we all agree to be bound by it, a decision was made and so hopefully we all agree to follow the due authority of the N.P.C.. We all agreed pursuant to the constitution of the party that the attacks on each other would stop and that we would move forward to having a united party, notwithstanding the fact that we are proud to embrace our democratic aspects of the U.D.P. So, we move forward. We have one true enemy and that is the P.U.P. and not each other. And, we all agree that the members of the party will support each other, abide by the constitution and move forward. Hopefully, what happened Saturday is the start of a new journey to see the U.D.P. be back fighting fit and in its best form. The N.P.C. made it very clear that the N.P.C. decision must be followed. If they are not followed, if any member of the party chooses to not respect that authority of the N.P.C., well I am sure the N.P.C. would then respond to that in due time, but I don’t even want to contemplate that possibilities.”
