Guyana native is newest appointed judge

Story PictureA new Justice has been appointed to the Supreme Court: he is Guyana native sixty-three year old Oswell Legall. Legall took the oath of office this morning in a ceremony held in Supreme Court number one before Justice Samuel Awich, who presided in place of Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh. Legall arrived in the country with his wife Janet on the seventeenth and will assume his duties on March second. He will be dealing with both criminal and civil cases in the heavy backlog of pending cases. Legall has over thirty years of experience in law, having served as Senior Crown Counsel in Guyana and the British Virgin Islands, as well as Solicitor General in St. Lucia. He was appointed a Judge in Guyana, acted as a Senior Legislative Drafter in Turks and Caicos, and was in private practice in Guyana before making the move to Belize. And still on the judiciary, the appointment of a Solicitor General is still pending since the departure of Tanya Herwanger who demitted office in June of last year.
