Canada helps out after Mitch
Outside of the cayes and exposed coastal areas, the greatest damage caused by Hurricane Mitch in Belize was the wear and tear on public shelters. Today, the government of Canada donated 54 thousand Belize dollars, which will be used to make repairs and replace broken equipment in eight schools used as shelters in the Belize, Orange Walk and Toledo districts. The cheque was presented by Canadian Honorary Consul Lester Young to Elias Awe, program director of Help for Progress. That organization well be supervising the rehabilitation project.
