James Adderley with weekend sports
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to another dose of Sports Monday. We start this session by taking you out to City Center for the high school basketball clash between St. John’s College and E.P. Yorke High School.
As usual the St. John’s team comes out very organized as demonstrated here by perfect ball movement which ends with a swish for Ryan Leslie. For E.P. Yorke it’s a missed shot that gives Jason Hyde his look at the rim; he gives Excelsior its first field goal. From just inside the 3-point line George Jones keeps S.J.C. ahead by 5 points. In fact it’s more S.J.C. when Michael Tsai hoops up with Chaha Lightburn who makes it look easy. Still this careless cross-court pass is picked off by George Jones who takes it all the way for the Landivar guys. But when Hassan Hamed gets this put back to fall at the end of the first, E.P. Yorke finds itself only down by three.
Second half finds S.J.C. still with the momentum. It’s Michael Tsai with the steal and the save, George Jones blows the easy lay up but Ryan Leslie gets the bucket for a five point S.J.C. lead. However E.P. Yorke suddenly gets their act going – the finish to Edwin Baptist who displays athleticism on his way to the hoop. Key bucket of the ball game comes when S.J.C. allows Kiran Marsden to muscle his own rebound and force it up in heavy traffic for two big points; E.P. Yorke goes up by three. Off this throw, Selford Flowers gets a good look and he delivers two more lead points for E.P. Yorke. When you’re hot, you’re hot! Selford Flowers rebounds, hits… E.P. Yorke goes on to win 49-42.
Meanwhile folks, on the female undercard Ursula Johnson hits this free throw to force Pallotti into second overtime against arch rival S.C.A. Right off the tip Janisha Straker bolts to the board for 2 S.C.A. points. Pallotti comes back with Shana Avilez to finger roll, to give her a 2 point lead. It turns out to be the game winner… Pallotti wins 19-17 in double overtime.
Now let’s head to the M.C.C. Grounds for yesterday’s B.F.L. match between Acros of Belize City and La Victoria of Corozal. Very early this floater from off the right wing gives John Brooks a bit of problem but none he couldn’t overcome. It’s only five minutes deep when this center is headed to the near upright by Pedro Barrahona and then he smashes the rebound into the goal to give La Victoria a 1-zip lead.
Barrahona creates more problems for John Brooks on this right foot low cruise missile but the goalkeeper is up to the task this time. Acros tries to get something going with the Mexican striker Ortega but his strike is halted from reaching its target. It’s another Acros attempt at the equalizer but this striker can finish the play in crunch time. A few minutes later same striker, same single, same result – only this time it’s a right foot attempt. Talk about dodging a bullet, John Brooks must have gotten help from “the above” on this play and at the half it’s a 1-zip La Victoria lead.
In early second half, Oliver Hendricks floats for Clifford Usher who smashes it home for the 2-zip La Victoria lead. Okay, with the penalty the Mexican Ortega has the opportunity to put Acros on to the scoreboard. The ball bounces off the bar giving La Victoria the 2-zip big “W”.
To other results, Yabra and Real Verdes battle for a 1 all stalemate, Jube beats Belmopan Bandits 2-1. Defending champion Juventus rolled over Dangriga Jaguars to the tune of 10-1. Talk about a massacre!
Hey folks that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
