Delegation from mainland China visits
In other diplomatic news a delegation from the People’s Republic of China is in Belize looking for opportunities in trade and investment. Viewers should note that these visitors are not from Taiwan, which is known formally as the Republic of China, but from the communist state on the mainland. Belize and the P.R.C. established relations in 1985 but the Chinese broke them in 1990 when the government recognized Taiwan. At present Belize maintains what are called “friendly contacts” with the mainland government. The seventeen-member delegation, led by Mrs. Zhong Min, Vice President of the Chinese Council for International Commerce, will be meeting with government officials and representatives of the private sector.
