D.F.C. Terminations Spark Midday Protest

Employees at the D.F.C. Headquarters in Belmopan were out protesting at midday. News Five understands that three employees were handed letters of termination on grounds of redundancy. This latest development has caused quite a stir within the financial institution. Those in protest of the terminations are claiming that the notices given are in contravention of section forty- five of the Labor Act which speaks to redundancy. President of the Christian Workers Union, Evan “Mose” Hyde, is representing those terminated employees. He told News Five “the management of D.F.C. has not complied with all the redundancy requirements”.  The Labor Department has called a meeting for tomorrow in Belmopan.  “Today’s activity was due to our disappointment and the dissatisfaction with the redundancy exercise which was carried. We informed them that in our view they were not implementing the exercise in accordance to the Labor Act. Yesterday, three of our members were issued there redundancy letters, officially terminating them as of yesterday. We at the C.W.U. has informed them that due to their lack of compliance with the Act we were not accepting the notices. In our view our employees have not been terminated.”

The CWU President says “if the outcome of the meeting is not satisfactory the union will utilize all options available us”.
