Belize City man shot by bicycle thief

Police are on the lookout for a man who shot and killed twenty-two year old Emort Jefferson Michael sometime between nine and ten Tuesday night. Police say Michael, who lived on the third flat of a three storey wooden building at the corner of Cleghorn and Mapp Streets, had just returned home and was about to put away his bicycle, when a tall dark man came up to the fence and ran off with the bike. A woman, who does not wish to appear on camera, was standing close by and witnessed the murder. She told News Five what she saw.

Eyewitness

“The young man, who died, come and park his bicycle. He never suppose to have gone up high on his steps, when a young man came from around the corner so and jump on the bicycle. So they start to tackle. The young boy come from upstairs so and they start to tackle and they end up over so, not knowing he had a gun on him about so big. I never know, but when his daddy come, it was two shots he got, but it looked like this one killed him. He said, aye, help me, please. Same time a taxi was coming from around the same corner there and they took him.”

A total of four shots were fired at Michael, but only two made their mark: one to the victim’s abdomen and another above his heart. The assailant is reported to have fled the scene in an unidentified black Oldsmobile. During their investigation police recovered a twenty-five caliber expended shell from the scene. At this time authorities say they do not have anyone in custody and their investigation into the shooting continues.
